Many people love using CBD for a variety of ailments from sciatica and muscle pain to PTSD and depression. It has been changing thousands of lives for years and continues to do so as the stigma of marijuana derivatives is fading. A lot of people also claim that CBD helps them to control their mental disorders, but is this really the case?
At Slyng, we want to make sure that you are informed when it comes to using CBD for mental disorders. That’s why were are going to take a look into the truth about CBD for mental disorders from cold hard research and my personal experience with CBD.
What is CBD?
If you are regular with Slyng, it's safe to assume you know what CBD is. But for the newcomers, let's take a minute and break it down. CBD stands for Cannabidiol and is one of the many components of marijuana.
But it is a non-psychoactive ingredient, meaning it will not be able to get you high. This makes it an amazing product for many to use on a regular basis for adults, kids, and even pets! There are many products on the market that contain CBD from oils, topicals, food, and even lip balm.
What is CBD Mainly Used For?
While anyone can pick up CBD in a local shop, it is used by physicians mainly for epilepsy according to a study done by Harvard University
Harvard says, “The strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to anti-seizure medications. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases, it was able to stop them altogether.”
Because of the effectiveness of childhood epilepsy, the FDA approved Epidiolex
, the first marijuana medication to be sold to help with these conditions. But seeing as it is considered to be almost like a vitamin, it is at the user's discretion what they want to use it for. Whether you want to try it out for your sore muscles, improve your mood, or help with any mental disorders you are able to give it a try.
But just like any other vitamin or “cure all” substance, you need to do your research. So, is CBD a viable resource to help you keep your mental disorder in check?
Will CBD Help with Mental Disorders?
Seeing as every mental disorder is different, you cannot just give someone CBD and expect it to work. Each one requires time, patience, and maybe even other medications or therapy to provide results. CBD for Depression
Depression is, unfortunately, an extremely common mood disorder that can affect your entire life from mood swings to appetite. Some people may even neglect their hygiene. Some of the many side effects include feelings of worthlessness, irritability, fatigue, headaches, and pain in the body.
While the traditional route when it comes to treating depression is medication and/or therapy, many people have turned to CBD. You can find stories all over the internet of people giving their testimony on how amazing CBD is for depression. But what does science say?
One study from the Institute of Psychiatry - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro
agrees with the public. They did a study in 2014 on whether or not CBD can aid in treating depression and the results were promising.
The researchers said, “The aim of this study is to review studies of animal models using CBD as an anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like compound. Studies involving animal models, performing a variety of experiments on the above-mentioned disorders, such as the forced swimming test (FST), elevated plus maze (EPM) and Vogel conflict test (VCT), suggest that CBD exhibited anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects in animal models discussed. Experiments with CBD demonstrated non-activation of neuroreceptors CB1 and CB2. Most of the studies demonstrated a good interaction between CBD and the 5-HT1A neuro-receptor.”
While this seems simple, it's actually real proof that CBD is helpful for depression.
CBD for PTSD
PTSD stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
. It is defined as a disorder that “can develop after exposure to a potentially traumatic event that is beyond a typical stressor. Events that may lead to PTSD include, but are not limited to, violent personal assaults, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents, combat, and other forms of violence.”
Some symptoms include agitation, social isolation, self-destructive behavior, mistrust, and severe anxiety. According to a study done by the Laboratory of Neuropsychopharmacology
in Tubarão, Brazil, many of the current treatments are not effective and cause many side effects. While this study does say CBD needs to be researched more before being made a proper medication for PTSD, it also mentions that the research shows that its an amazing alternative to traditional medication.
The study says, “The effects of CBD on the different stages of aversive memory processing make this compound a candidate pharmacological adjunct to psychological therapies for PTSD. CBD also shows an action profile with fewer side effects than the pharmacological therapy currently used to treat this type of disorder. In addition, even at high doses, CBD does not show the anxiogenic profile of compounds that directly activate eCB transmission.”
CBD for Anxiety
Anxiety is described as a disorder that is “More than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time.”
Symptoms of anxiety include irritability, muscle tension, restlessness, sweating, heart palpations, being out of control, and shaking. Anxiety can disrupt a person's normal schedule and cause them to not really live their life.
According to a study done by the Department of Psychiatry, University of Colorado
, Denver CBD could be beneficial for anxiety disorders but it needs to be tested further.
Their study said, “The final sample consisted of 72 adults presenting with primary concerns of anxiety (n = 47) or poor sleep (n = 25). Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remained decreased during the study duration. Sleep scores improved within the first month in 48 patients (66.7%) but fluctuated over time. In this chart review, CBD was well tolerated in all but 3 patients.”
My Experience with CBD
I have personally suffered from anxiety for several years that has caused me to have many issues throughout my life. It could be something simple as deciding what we are eating for dinner or my son having a temper tantrum, any of that could send me into an anxiety attack. But once I learned about CBD, I decided to give it a try.
After trying CBD in the form of a tincture, I was able to relax and actually think through problems without feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. It was honestly an amazing feeling that almost brought me to tears. Since that first experience, I have discovered that I prefer to use CBD through vaping.
On a typical day, I will wake up and take a few hits off of my vape pen and will do so throughout my day. If I am having a rough day, I'll use a tincture with a higher dosage and it eases my anxiety significantly. Both of these have helped me live a better life every day. While they have improved my anxiety it's not a “cure-all” as some suggest.
